Chapter Eight

Spencer watched Maura’s eyes widen with shock. She stared at him for several seconds before dropping her gaze, but not before he’d seen a look of guilt flash briefly in the depths of her hazel eyes.

“I don’t know what you mean,” Maura said, but while her voice had an edge to it, her tone lacked conviction.

“I think you do,” Spencer replied noting her reluctance to meet his gaze.

Spencer’s question had thrown her for a loop. The realization that he’d asked Hank to keep an eye on her stung. How else would he have known she’d been asking questions about her father?

He didn’t trust her, that much was clear, and she was surprised to discover how much that hurt.

“I told you. I’m here to work with Indigo,” Maura said with a calmness she was far from feeling. “I was merely making conversation with Hank.”

“Why don’t I believe you?” Spencer asked, annoyance in his voice. He pushed off the swing and stood up.

Maura slowed the swing’s sudden movement with her feet. The evening had grown cold. She shivered as she too got to her feet.

She understood and even admired Spencer’s impulse to protect the man who’d been his father-in-law, a man he obviously held in high regard. But until such time as she had an opportunity to talk to her father and find out his feelings on her paternity, she was determined to keep the matter private.

The possibility that Michael Carson would deny he was her father and turn his back on her was very real and not to be ignored. She was simply trying to safeguard her own heart should he reject her a second time.

“There is something, isn’t there?” he persisted.

Maura met his piercing gaze and felt her heart slam against her breastbone in reaction.

“Nothing that should concern you,” she said, knowing she was saying too much, but hoping it would be enough to satisfy him. “I think I’ll go in now.” She made a move toward the back door.

She didn’t get far. His hands snaked out to stop her. He grabbed her upper arms almost as if he might shake her. His touch sent a frisson of alarm and awareness through her and it was all she could do to meet his gaze.

His blue eyes looked deeply into hers, holding her captive.

“Spencer, please…” she started to say, but her words were cut off in midsentence when his mouth came down on hers.

The kiss was hot, wet and punishing. Maura’s
